Before its split in 2006 after 15 years together, Californian indie rock band Grandaddy was adored equally by critics and fans. The band’s former singer, Jason Lytle, went on to a solo career, releasing acclaimed album Yours Truly, the Commuter in 2009 before forming a new band, Admiral Radley, later that year. Lytle is in Australia for a series of intimate solo shows, promising songs from his back catalogue and some of his latest tracks. Tickets are $33 plus booking fee. With a career that began in the 1940s, Raj Kapoor revolutionised Indian cinema. The late actor and director helped create the Bollywood template, and was often compared to Clark Gable and Gene Kelly. ACMI is celebrating Kapoor’s career this month by screening 13 of his films, some on new 35mm prints. The season kicks off tonight with 1973 comedy Bobby. Almost five months have passed since Geelong beat Collingwood in the 2011 grand final – and for footy fans, the wait for the new season is almost over. The pre-season NAB Cup competition kicks off tomorrow night at Etihad Stadium, as Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne play two shortened matches each in a round-robin format. Saturday night? Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert series returns to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl this month. On Saturday, Benjamin Northey will conduct Kalkadungu, a celebration of indigenous culture with a concerto by William Barton as its centrepiece. Melbourne painter Alexandra Sassé is interested in faces; so much so that they are the focus of her latest exhibition, Regarding the Face, which opens at fortyfivedownstairs on Tuesday. The portrait artist’s work is highlighted by vibrant visages, each painted from life. Sassé is a Victorian College of the Arts graduate, and will travel to Cyprus
later this year for an artist residency.

When you name your organisation the Awesome Foundation, you’d want it to be pretty cool, right? Good thing, then, that the Awesome Foundation is just that. Celebrating its first birthday next week, the Melbourne-based collective awards a $1000 grant each month to a project it deems worthy of support. On Wednesday, the organisation will give away a $3000 mega grant at its birthday party. Held at a secret location that will be revealed on the day, the party will feature cocktails, live music and showcases by previous grants recipients.

Next week, the Arts Centre will launch its latest children’s program, coinciding with the return of the Famous Spiegeltent.
