Aside from
Casey Donovan, here's five other must-see events at Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival.
The acclaimed Ilbijerri Theatre Company will present two encore performances of Coranderrk: We Will Show the Country (Saturday and Sunday at 4pm). The show unites the power of oral history and the authority of the written word as it explores real-life Victorian issues from the late 1800s.
Larissa Behrendt, Richard Frankland and Tony Briggs are among the storytellers invited to take part in Indigenous Writers Talks. Poets, songwriters, scriptwriters and authors will read, perform and talk about their work as well as discuss themes of contemporary indigenous literature.
CW favourite Dan Sultan will also take to the Federation Square stage on Saturday night. The Melbourne boy has been hard at work recording the follow-up to his 2009 ARIA-winning album Get Out While You Can.
The regular Koorie Night Market will become the Koorie Day Market on Sunday as it takes over The Atrium from 10am until 4pm. A variety of stallholders from across Victoria will sell indigenous and Torres Strait Islander arts, crafts and food, with dance demonstrations and music part of the fun.
ACMI will screen a diverse range of short and feature-length films as part of the annual Blak Nite Cinema event. Highlights include Brendan Fletcher’s Mad Bastards and football documentary Three Boys Dreaming. Free tickets are available on the morning of the screening.
