Five new Australian plays will have their first public readings this week as part of the annual National Play Festival. The event, which runs until Saturday, comprises readings, talks and panel discussions suitable for industry types or just theatre buffs. The five readings include works by Gary Abrahams, Vanessa Bates and Nicki Bloom. The program also includes an event celebrating the early years of Melbourne’s theatre scene, and the chance to hear new works by Scottish writers Morna Pearson and Lynda Radley. Each month, animators from around the globe create a new looping animation based on a particular topic and load their work online. Brisbane four-piece Last Dinosaurs have had a summer to remember. In the past few months, the indie rockers have clocked up a YouTube smash (the video clip for new single Zoom), supported it-boys Foster the People on a national tour and prepared for the release of their debut album In a Million Years (out on March 3).
