Fashion designers aren't known for having a penchant for protesting. Have you ever spied one marching with a placard or waving her fist in the air behind a picket line? But last night at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, fashion designers took a stand. In the Designer Series Runway #1 catwalk show, it seems all they were saying was "give Ps a chance". You'd do well to listen to them, too, because spring trends are all about the letter P.
Pewter: More modern and more mature than silver, pewter is the new metallic to watch. It was seen on a baseball jacket and draped dresses at Ellery, evening wear at Aurelio Costarella and Gwendolynne and in a day ensemble at Scanlan and Theodore.
Pom poms: Oversized raffia pom pom headpieces threatened to steal the limelight during Aurelio Costarella's show and had every DIY lover frantically tapping memos into the "inspiration" list on their smartphone.
Puffs: Ellery went overboard with organza-like fabric in pretty white dresses and tops featuring over-proportioned puff sleeves - best left to those who need a little help in the shoulder department.
Pleats: Michael Lo Sordo started out with pleats, but went one step further, cutting them into narrow panels that really made skirts swing.
Palazzo and pyjama pants: Lui Hon offered cropped versions with all-over fringing, while Christine showed flowing versions in monochrome and every kind of print imaginable.
Peplums: It's not time to pack them away just yet. Peplums stood out (pardon the pun) in just about every collection, adding interest to softly tailored pieces at Maticevski and Scanlan and Theodore and highlighting hips on more sharply structured garments at Ellery and Aurelio Costarella.
Prints: Flinders Lane store Christine reigned supreme in this department, showcasing their international designer range and setting off floral, digital, tribal and baroque-inspired prints with their envy-inducing accessories, including elongated bugs-eye sunglasses and flowing fringed scarves (fringing was also seen at Lui Hon, so it's something else to look out for this season).
